Christ’s Lane open for the first time in almost half a century
8 November 2006
For the first time in almost 50 years, historic Christ's Lane – the pivotal link between Christ's Pieces and St Andrew's Street – is open to the public. The re-opening of the lane is a key feature of the development being undertaken by Land Securities, to create the new benchmark Christ’s Lane shopping destination on the site of the former Bradwell’s Court.
The Christ’s Lane walkway is housed in a temporary tunnel, designed with safety and security in mind. It is well lit and CCTV monitored, and of course being covered provides protection from the elements.
The permanent access, which will be significantly wider than the current temporary tunnel, is scheduled to be open towards the end of 2007 on completion of the development. Much brighter and more pleasant than the previous thoroughfare through Bradwell’s Court, it will be paved to reflect the traditional historic streets of Cambridge, and showcase contemporary public art.

This construction site seems so out of place among the classic buildings! :)
